JFK AIRPORT — An upstate man was arraigned two weeks ago for allegedly trying to bring drugs into the country, the Queens district attorney’s office said.
Stephen Garraity, 32, of Bronxville, N.Y., was charged April 2 with criminal impersonation and criminal possession of a controlled substance, the DA said.
Garraity arrived at the screening point at John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 5 a day earlier and a Transportation Safety agent allegedly found five folded dollar bills that had a white substance leaking out, according to the criminal complaint. The substance was later determined to be marijuana with traces of cocaine, the complaint said.
The suspect told agents it was his medication, but could not produce any prescription, the DA said. Garrarity allegedly maintained his innocence, claiming he was a former NYPD officer and currently a state trooper, according to the DA.
Although he produced a city Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association card the suspect claimed was given to him by a “partner,” there were no records that Garraity worked as an agent for either law enforcement office.
