ST. ALBANS — A 22-year-old St. Albans man was arrested after he allegedly drove his friend’s car recklessly along 121st Avenue and got into an accident that injured another man, the Queens district attorney said.
Ashley Mohammed, of 200-24 Hollis Ave. in St. Albans, was arraigned May 2 before Queens Criminal Court Judge Ira Margulis on charges of assault, reckless endangerment, taking part in a race, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and speed restrictions, Queens DA Richard Brown said.
The defendant, who was held on $50,000 bail, will return to court May 20, the DA said.
Mohammed is alleged to have raced his friend’s 1997 grey BMW without permission and speeding down the center median of 121st Avenue, Brown said. The car spun out of control and smacked into the other vehicle, causing the air bags in both cars to deploy. the DA said.
The driver of the other vehicle is currently in North Shore Manhasset Hospital with serious injuries, including blood on the brain, four broken ribs and two broken vertebrae, the DA said.
The defendant allegedly told police that he did not have a driver’s license, Brown said.
