Bob Turner, a Republican from Rockaway Point who is running for U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner’s (D-Forest Hills) seat, has raised a little less than $40,000 and has given himself a little more than $50,000 in the last campaign filing period, according to his most recent filing with the Federal Election Commission.
The $40,000 he raised is far less than the amount Weiner collected, which was about $230,000 from the April 1 to June 30 filing period, according to the FEC. Turner loaned himself about $53,000 and spent a little more than $48,000. He has about $44,000 cash on hand.
Weiner, a six-term Democratic incumbent, has just over $700,000 in cash on hand and he has spent $146,582.
A businessman who grew up in Woodhaven, raised a family in Richmond Hill and moved to Rockaway Point 20 years ago, Turner decided this spring to run for the 9th Congressional District.
The district includes Bayside, Briarwood, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Fresh Meadows, Glendale, Hillcrest, Howard Beach, Jamaica Hills, Kew Gardens, Maspeth, Middle Village, Oakland Gardens, Ozone Park, Rego Park, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood, Rockaway Park, Rockaway Point, Woodhaven and parts of Brooklyn.
The Rockaway Point retiree received donations from people throughout the country, including California, Florida and Queens.
David Bancroft, an attorney from San Francisco, gave $500, as did Shailesh Patel, the head of research at Orlando-based Fremantlemedia, an international company that is responsible for such programs as “American Idol” and “The Price Is Right.”
His biggest donation was $2,400 from two individuals. Breezy Point resident David Brohel, who is retired, gave $2,400, as did Breezy Point resident Geraldine Brohel, who listed her profession as “housewife.”
Forest Hills resident John A. Milevoi, a real estate manager, gave $500, and John McGrath, a lawyer from Richmond Hill, gave $1,000.
Turner’s largest expense was the $10,000 he paid for polling to McLaughlin & Associates, which is based in Blauvelt, N.Y. He gave $8,500 to Precision Marketing for direct mailings.
Other expenses included $2,400 for legal services and $2,000 for website services. He paid $2,625 for a fund-raiser reception at Kasey’s Kitchen & Cocktails in Rockville Centre, L.I. Another $1,000 went to a speech coach.
