The Center for the Women of New York will be holding its 21st job/career fair and workshops for working women at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel in Flushing.
The Oct. 22 conference, called “The World of Working Women,” begins with registration at 9 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. It is an annual event for the center, and this year’s conference will focus on job trends and how to get jobs in the current market.
“There is no use complaining about lost jobs,” the center said. “While some of the jobs that were lost will return, our modes of doing business have made many fundamental changes and those old jobs will not reappear.”
The center said areas where jobs are available include green technologies, communication and virtual business as well as fields that specialize in new ways of delivering services in education and health care. There will also be a focus on social networking, starting a business, how to use computers and changing over to a new career at the conference.
One of the panelists is Maureen Nappi, an artist, writer, theorist and professor at Long Island University who was recently inducted into The Women’s National Hall of Fame as a Veteran Feminist of America and was an advisory member of the Artists’ Fellowship Program of the New York Foundation of the Arts.
The day’s events include a panel discussion from 10:15 a.m. to noon by women in government agencies, unions, job help services, universities and other fields. The panel will be moderated by Roz Liston, editor of TimesLedger Newspapers. Also on the agenda are a job fair from noon to 3 p.m. where seekers can meet with representatives from a variety of companies; workshops from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on how to find careers; and a fashion show from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The day ends with a raffle and door prizes.
One of the special guests running a workshop is Carole Hyatt, writer of “Lifetime Employability” and a creator of many improvement programs for Fortune 500 companies, who has been showcased on many national television shows such as “Oprah,” “Good Morning America” and “The Today Show.” Her workshop is on using your talents to find new career possibilities.
Dr. Barry Miller, professor at Pace University and former adviser to Women in Corporate America, will also be hosting a panel on how to net job offers through social networking.
Sponsors in formation include TD Bank, Zonta International, T.J. Maxx, Queens Chronicle and TimesLedger Newspapers.
There is no fee for registration. Those attending the job fair are asked to bring a résumé.
