OZONE PARK — A high-speed crash on a street notorious for drag-racing killed one man and injured another Monday morning.
At about 10:16 a.m., the driver a 2003 black Nissan Maxima traveling westbound on North Conduit Avenue lost control and struck a light pole and landed upside down, police said.
Consuelo Aviles, 47, told the New York Post that she saw the accident on the way to work.
“The car was smoking. All you saw were desperate hands, coming out, waving for help,” she told the Post. “The impact was so bad, we tried to help everyone but didn’t know where to start. The only thing I was able to do was call 911.”
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and the driver, Geraud Gray, 24, of Brooklyn, was pronounced dead on arrival, according to police. His family has been notified.
An 18-year-old passenger was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was in stable condition Monday, police said.
Police told the Post that the car was estimated to be going faster than 90 miles per hour.
Area resident Latoya Medford, 24, told the Post that racing is a common occurrence on the stretch.
“People want to drive like maniacs. They speed race here every day. And every year, someone gets killed,” Medford said.
Witnesses told the Post that two other vehicles sped down the street about a minute before Gray’s car passed, but police said, “There is nothing to indicate that drag racing was involved.”
