They came in dressed as painters – and left with nearly $1 million.
According to a police source, the Chase Bank branch at 96-19 101st Avenue in Ozone Park was robbed on Monday, July 18.
The suspects, reportedly armed, entered the location just as it was opening by using the ruse.
Published reports say that the perps, two black males, forced the employees at gunpoint to the vault, and then reportedly bound them with duct tape before making off with “close to $900,000.”
A spokesperson for Chase confirmed the incident, telling The Courier there were no injuries and the bank was reopened by 3 p.m. that same day.
No other information was given.
“I always thought banks were so safe, now I’m not sure,” said Jenna Thompson, as she left the branch on Tuesday, July 19.
Reports claim that the amount the suspects made off with is the most of any robbery this year.
“They took so much money,” said Joe Polowski. “I hope this is a wake-up call for Chase, and all banks, to tighten up on security.”
Chase could not comment on its security measures.
