Gov. Andrew Cuomo called Friday for a special election to replace disgraced former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner in Congress, setting the contest for Primary Day, Sept. 13.
Weiner resigned last month after facing increasing pressure to step down following revelations that he tweeted a picture of his underwear-clad body and had illicit online conversations with six women.
Weiner originally said his Twitter account was hacked, but a week later said he lied and that the photo was of him and that he sent it.
Cuomo also set Sept. 13 special elections to fill two Queens state Assembly seats.
Former Flushing Assemblywoman Nettie Mayersohn, 85, retired in April after nearly 30 years in Albany and ex-Rockaway Beach Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer resigned from her post last month to take the Queens County clerk job, which had been vacant since the death of Gloria D’Amico.
Besides the three special elections, borough voters will cast ballots in a primary for Queens district attorney, although DA Richard Brown is expected to be endorsed by both major parties.
