We doubt there are many drivers in Queens who, at one time or another, have not shouted a curse or flipped the bird to an inconsiderate motorist. Things can turn ugly fast, but in most cases the cars soon go their separate ways and the anger subsides.
Road rage is part of city living. Sadly, a tragic incident that took place in Kew Gardens last week shows just how dangerous road rage can become. In a few moments an argument turned into a senseless murder.
The incident began in the early evening when two Kew Gardens brothers got into an argument when a motorist could not get past their double-parked SUV. The brothers pulled their car out of the way and it appeared the incident was over. Moments later, the driver pulled out a gun and shot both brothers, killing one.
This senseless killing has no place in a borough where the car is vital to everyday life.
Home Is Where the Heart Is
Questions have been raised about whether U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley can truly say he represents Queens since his family now lives much of the year in a house he owns in Virginia.
Crowley said he moved the family there for the sake of his wife and their three young children.
“I pay state and city taxes like any other New Yorker, but I am also a father,” he said. “I like to wake up with my kids when I can.”
When Congress is not in session, he said, the family returns to their residence in Woodside.
This is a tempest in a teapot. The people who sent Crowley to Washington want to know that he is representing their concerns on Capitol Hill. Given the recent scandals involving elected officials, we think voters will be happy to learn that their congressman wants to be near his family as much as possible.
We do not really care where the Crowley kids go to school or what bumper stickers are on the congressman’s car.
We are far more interested in learning his view on how Congress can work with the president to solve the nation’s debt crisis and how it can help Barack Obama lower gas prices and guarantee the future of Social Security and Medicare.
