Cuff R’Wood Man For Stickup On St.

Using what turned out to be a toy gun, a Ridgewood man robbed a woman of her pocketbook on a neighborhood street last Wednesday night, Jan. 11, and was collared the following day by police, it was reported.

Police sources identified the perpetrator as 24-year-old Luis Avila of Greene Avenue.

Reportedly, the holdup occurred at around 8:20 p.m. last Wednesday in front of a location on Linden Street between Fairview and Grandview avenues, about three blocks from the suspect’s residence.

Brandishing what appeared to be a black handgun, law enforcement sources said, Avila allegedly confronted the female victim and demanded her purse. After taking the bag, he reportedly fled from the scene.

The incident was later reported to the 104th Precinct. There were no injuries.

Based on information obtained by the 104th Precinct Detective Squad during their investigation, Avila was tracked down by detectives last Thursday, Jan. 12, and brought in for questioning.

Police sources stated that detectives learned that the weapon used in the stickup was actually a toy handgun which was painted black to look real.

Avila was charged last Thursday with first-degree armed robbery and fight-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

According to a spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown, Avila was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court last Friday, Jan. 13, before Judge Stephanie Zaro, who ordered him held on $25,000 bail. The suspect is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 30.
