Will Alleviate Overcrowding At P.S. 11

Space for a new elementary school in Woodside has been secured, City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer announced last Friday, Feb. 17.

According to the lawmaker, the school’s construction will add 440 new seats to District 30 when it opens in 2015.

“This agreement comes at a time when CEC 30 is in the midst of some of the worst overcrowding in the City of New York,” said Van Bramer in a Friday statement. “Today’s announcement shows a commitment by both the SCA and the DOE to address this problem in our district. This agreement will not only give our children the adequate space that is needed to learn but will also alleviate the strain that has been put on schools in the surrounding area.”

Van Bramer was joined at the press conference-held near the four lots, att 57th Street and 39th Avenue in Woodside-by School Construction Authority (SCA) President Lorraine Grillo, State Sen. Michael Gianaris, Assemblyman Michael DenDekker and representatives from Rep. Joseph Crowley’s office, Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan’s office, the District 30 Community Education Council (CEC 30) and the Department of Education.

The school is expected to relieive overcrowding at P.S. 11, located at 54-25 Skillman Ave., and in Woodside and Sunnyside, which sit in CEC 30. P.S. 11 currently sits at 117 percent capacity.
