St. John’s junior receives coveted lacrosse honor

Junior goalie Jeff Lowman was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, the highest regarded honor in college lacrosse. The list includes the top players from all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and features the most distinguished players in the collegiate game.

The Tewaaraton Award is often referred to as the “Heisman Trophy” of NCAA lacrosse and has been presented annually starting in 2001 to the top male and female collegiate lacrosse players. The award pays homage to the sport’s Native American roots and is endorsed by the Mohawk Nation Council of Elders and US Lacrosse.

Lowman solidifies the St. John’s defense and has become a standout between the pipes during the first two years of his Red Storm career. Last season, the Millersville, Md., native played all but 22 minutes in net over the 14-game schedule.

He ranked second nationally in saves per game, stopping an impressive 12.64 per contest. The junior goaltender ranks eighth on St. John’s all-time saves list with 285 and holds a career goals against average of 10.59. Lowman earned four BIG EAST Honor Roll selections last season, including one BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Award.

The Tewaaraton Selection Committee, comprised of top collegiate coaches, will make additions throughout the season until the list is eventually narrowed down to 25 players. In mid-May, the five finalists for the esteemed award will be announced.

St. John’s lacrosse opened the 2012 season at home Saturday at 1 p.m. against Holy Cross. Keep up with Red Storm lacrosse all season long at redstormsports.com and on Twitter by following @STJ_Lacrosse.
