Mellow appointed to federal Homeland Security council

Gail Mellow, president of LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, was appointed to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s new Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council last Thursday.

“Dr. Mellow’s extensive experience and expertise will make her a valuable asset to the Council,” DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement.

Mellow is one of 19 college presidents from across the country initially appointed to the new council, which Napolitano unveiled. The council will advise Napolitano and department leaders on recruiting students and recent graduates, international students, academic research, faculty exchanges and their communities’ resiliency, security and preparedness.

“I am honored to represent LaGuardia Community College, and all our nation’s community colleges, through the work with this council and the Department of Homeland Security,” Mellow said in a statement.

The first meeting will take place March 20 in Washington, D.C.
