City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside) will marry his longtime partner Dan Hendrick in Studio Square, a Long Island City event space, Saturday, his spokesman, Jason Banrey, said.
The marriage will make Van Bramer, who met Hendrick in 1999 during a fund-raiser in Kew Gardens for Queens Pride House, the first male openly gay city council member to wed since New York State’s law legalizing same-sex marriage went into effect last year.
Van Bramer has represented the communities of Sunnyside, Woodside and Long Island City since 2010. Hendrick is the communications director for the New York League of Conservation Voters and is completing a film about the revitalization of Jamaica Bay.
The couple will have a private, rooftop ceremony with 200 family and friends as guests. They obtained their license to wed July 24, marking the one-year anniversary when same-sex marriage went into effect, Banrey said.
Van Bramer and Hendrick will not be taking a honeymoon, Banrey said.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan) was the first openly gay city council member to wed when she tied the knot with Kim Catullo in May.
