Felony Crimes Up In Fy 2012

NYPD Response Times Up, Summonses Down

Major felony crimes increased during the past fiscal year, according to a report by the Mayor’s Office.

The final Mayor’s Management Report (MMR), released each September, notes that 109,299 felonies occurred in Fiscal Year 2012 as opposed to 105,496 in the previous fiscal year.

Robberies, felony assaults, burglaries and larcenies all rose, with assaults seeing an increase for the fourth consecutive year.

Auto larcenies, however, dropped for the fifth straight year, and murders and rapes also declined.

Crime also increased in city housing developments and within the transit system.

Other highlights from the report:

– Traffic fatalities involving motorists rose substantially, from 78 in 2011 to 115 in 2012, an increase of over 30 percent. Fatalities involving cyclists rose slightly, from 158 to 176.

– Quality-of-life summonses dropped from 538,024 in 2011 to 497,656 in 2012, although noise summonses remained relatively level.

– Average response times to crimes across the city rose for the fourth straight year, from 7.5 minutes in Fiscal Year 2010 to 8.4 minutes in 2011 to 9.1 minutes in 2012.

However, response times to “critical” events remained steady at 4.6 minutes.

The MMR is mandated by the City Charter and provides data on all city agencies and services. A preliminary report is released in February, and a final report is released at the end of the fiscal year.
