U.S. Rep. Bob Turner (R-Middle Village) has announced passage by the House of Representatives of his bill to strengthen security in the nation’s mass transit facilities.

The bill, H.R. 3857, the Public Transportation Security and Local Law Enforcement Support Act, passed by more than 350 votes and now goes to the U.S. Senate.

“I am proud that this bill passed with strong bipartisan support,” said Turner. “This legislation will make it easier for law enforcement agencies to keep our transportation systems secure,” Turner said.

The bill will permit Transit Security Grant Program funds to be used to sustain specialized patrol teams that protect mass transit systems.

“This is a crucial step in helping the NYPD and other law enforcement agencies protect its citizens and visitors from all over the world,” the congressman said.
