Takes Slug For Cousin In Ridgewood
Trying to assist a relative who got into a fight at a Ridgewood bar early on Sunday morning, Dec. 30, 2012, proved to be a painful decision for a 38-year-old man who was shot in the abdomen for his trouble, law enforcement sources said.
The victim was reportedly rushed by paramedics to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not life-threatening.
Police said the gunman behind the incident-described as a Hispanic male believed to be 20 years of age, standing 5’7″-tall, weighing 140 lbs. and wearing a gray sweatshirt, a black skull cap and gloves-remains at large as of press time.
Reportedly, the trouble began at around 2:50 a.m. in the vicinity of Cypress Avenue and Decatur Street.
According to information obtained by police, the victim responded to the location after learning that his cousin had become involved in a physical altercation with an unidentified individual at an area bar.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement sources said, the gunman opened fire on the victim, strik- ing him in the abdomen, then fled in an unknown direction.
Members of the 104th Precinct and EMS units responded to the location. The victim was brought to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.
Various police units canvassed the surrounding area for the gunman, but despite their efforts, no immediate arrests were made, law enforcement sources noted.
The case was presented to the 104th Precinct Detective Squad for further investigation, police said.
