Setting the Stage for Queens Film Festival

Movies With Local & International Flair

The Queens World Film Festival returns to the Museum of the Moving Image next month with an opening night program on Mar. 5 featuring international short films from Italy, Belgium, and Australia as well as the work of Queens filmmakers.

Special guests and honorees include City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, who will be recognized for his years of service to Queens and greater New York City. Actress and 1970s icon Karen Black will also be honored for her unique contributions to cinema and her enduring commitment to aspiring filmmakers.

Films to be featured on opening night of the festival include the following:

Heads Up (Brooklyn)-Two long-time partners in crime, who love each other to death.

Lonely Eros (Belgium)-There is an emotion established and it pulls you in and may not let you go.

Le tette di una diciottenne (Italy) Behind the crude and vulgar manner of a Roman taxi driver lies a humanity that suffers. It’s the cry of pain and the exorcism of a lonely man with a son at war.

Planet Utero (Queens)-In a far off galaxy a young girl escapes from a dystopian suburban planet.

At the Formal (Australia)-The pack mentality and the sanctioned depravity of the high school formal.

Pollicino (Italy)-For a person with Alzheimer’s, finding the way back home can be an Odyssey.

Silent River (Croatia)-Gregor and Vali must escape, yet there is mutual distrust. In the end, only hope is left.

The six-day festival will feature over 70 hours of independent films and extend into venues at the Jackson Cinema in Elmhurst, The Secret Theatre in Long Island City and the Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights.

Awards will be presented in the following categories to narratives, documentaries animation and LGBT films. The presentation of the Crystal Globes will be the centerpiece of Closing Night, with our award-winning films scheduled for encore screenings on Sunday, Mar. 10 at the Secret Theatre.

The third annual Queens World Film Festival celebrates the diversity of Queens by representing both local artists and international projects, and positioning the borough as a destination for both filmmakers and film lovers.

The film festival is a recipient of a 2013 Queens Council on the Arts /Department of Cultural Affairs grant and is proudly sponsored by Kaufman Astoria Studios, Amalgamated Bank and Manhattan Portage.
