Preview: Bushwick Open Studios 2013

587 Events At 200+ Locations

Next weekend, scores of art lovers will flock to Bushwick for Bushwick Open Studios (BOS) 2013, a free, open-to-thepublic event celebrating art and artists in the neighborhood, as well as parts of Ridgewood, Bed-Stuy and East Williamsburg.

This map shows the locations of events scheduled for Bushwick Open Studios 2013. Several events will be held at local eateries, retailers and galleries. Many more will be hosted by the artists at their residences throughout the neighborhood and adjacent parts of Brooklyn North.

Two-hundred and thirty-five different spaces will open up to the public for 587 shows over the 3-day event, according to the event’s website. Restaurants, galleries and retail stores will host artists-many, many more artists have chosen to open up their apartments to visitors.

Bushwick Open Studios is organized by Arts in Bushwick, an allvolunteer organization founded in 2007 to forward arts in the Bushwick community.

There are hundreds of shows and events planned for this year’s BOS- here is a list of main events planned by Arts in Bushwick:

Launch Party

BOS 2013 opens with a launch party from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Shea Stadium BK, located at 20 Meadow St. in East Williamsburg. Brooklyn bands Eula, Darlings and The Beets will play sets while Brooklyn Brewery doles out suds at the open bar. Event sponsor The Bosco will provide a photo booth with live digital feed.

Seeking Space exhibition

Exhibition and work space 3rd Ward will host the fourth annual BOS visual arts group exhibition Seeking Space from noon to 7 p.m., May 31 and June 1-2. The open-call event will feature work from more than 30 artists. 3rd Ward is located at 195 Morgan Ave. in East Williamsburg.

BOS 2013 Music Festival

The BOS Music Festival is a twoday showcase of Brooklyn rock bands playing a variety of genres, like punk, soul, rockabilly and glam. Bands will perform from May 31 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Don Pedro, located at 90 Manhattan Ave. in Williamsburg. On June 1, groups will crank out tunes from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., at Lone Wolf, located at 1089 Broadway in Bushwick.

Hybrid: Performance art

Hybrid aims to present performance art that is provocative and dialogue inducing. Performances can be seen Saturday, June 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Brooklyn Fireproof East, located at 120 Ingraham St. in East Williamsburg.

Electronic music showcase

There will be a separate electronic music showcase on June 2 from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. at Bossa Nova Civic Club, located at 1271 Myrtle Ave. in Bushwick. Local and up-andcoming electronic musicians will provide music. There will be a cash bar, no cover, and the event is 21-and-up.

Community mural launch

On Saturday, June 1, Bushwick resident and artist Miriam Castillo will unveil a new mural titled “How Does Food Unite People” at La Marqueta de Williamsburg. The mural was designed by Castillo and a team of student-artists from the Beacon Center for Arts and Leadership. The volunteers have been painting the mural since early April. The unveiling will feature live music and food from the market.

BOS 2013 Community Day

The community day, held in Maria Hernandez Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 2, will bring together artists, vendors and families in the Bushwick community. There will be arts and crafts stations, local artists, live music and other family-friendly activities.

Moving Forward music concert

Brooklyn Fireproof will also host a music festival from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., June 2. The festival will feature two indoor and outdoor stages boasting established and undiscovered artists playing a variety of styles, including folk, synthwave, psychedelic and avante-garde new music.

Cinema Sunday/Closing Party

Closing day will allow video and film artists to display work on a big screen from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.at Bat Haus, located at 279 Starr St. The event will feature a series of selected shorts, Q&A with the filmmakers, and a backyard barbecue.
