Cabbie receives 11 years in passenger slay: DA

OZONE PARK — A livery cab driver was sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to robbing and killing a patron three years ago, the Queens DA said.

In July 2010, the cab driver, 24-year-old Deevan Jagmarine, of 142-43 123rd Ave., picked up the passenger, Matadin Ramnarain, 58, who authorities described as intoxicated.

Jagmarine then picked up his friend, Alex Gobardhan, 22, of 104-43 106th St, and the pair drove Ramnarain to in Ozone Park, punched him in the face and robbed him of his cellphone, wallet and a gold bracelet, the DA said. They then dumped his body, which was found by a passerby, according to the district attorney

Ramnarain was brought to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, and his cause of death was determined to be cardiac arrhythmia due to cardiovascular disease following blunt trauma to the head, authorities said.

Gobardhan in July was sentenced to 17 years to life in prison after he was convicted of second-degree murder, robbery and criminal possession of stolen property, the DA said.

Jagmarine testified against his friend in the trial, according to the district attorney.
