Primary Guide: City Council District 34

Four Democrats are competing in the primary for City Council District 34, which represents Ridgewood, Williamsburg and Bushwick.

Vito Lopez previously worked as both a social worker and a professor. He had served as a state assemblyman since 1985, but resigned in May amid allegations that he sexually harassed his employees.

Before working for the district’s current councilwoman, Antonio Reynoso served as a community and labor organizer for child care workers. He has been chief of staff since 2009.

Gladys Santiago previously worked as a home health aide and served as a district leader in 2002. She said her most important issues are affordable housing, child care, education and jobs.

Humberto Soto, the founder of the New York Latino Independent Democratic Club, is an admissions officer at Boricua College in Brooklyn. The issues he considers most important are housing and education.
