Voters send Koslowitz back to Council for another term

By Bianca Fortis

Karen Koslowitz (D-Forest Hills) will continue to serve on the City Council after she won the race for the 29th Council District seat. She walked away with 91.8 percent of the vote, while her Republican opponent in the race, Jon Torodash, won 8.2 percent, with 58 percent of the ballots counted, according to preliminary results from the Associated Press.

The district includes Forest Hills, Rego Park and Kew Gardens.

Koslowitz served on the City Council from 1991 to 2001. She was deputy borough president until 2009 when she was again elected to the Council. She chairs the Council’s Committee on Economic Development.

Torodash, a software engineer and former teacher who said he has never before been a member of a political party, ran on the Civic Virtue line. The name of the party is a nod to the “Triumph of Civic Virtue,” a statute that was controversially moved from Borough Hall to a private cemetery in Brooklyn.
