‘ashes to Go’ at Midville Church

Unique Holy Day Distribution Wed.

Christians will mark the start of Lent this Ash Wednesday, Mar. 5, and a Middle Village church plans a unique commemoration of the holy day.

Pastor Delores Barrett of Community United Methodist Church will distribute “Ashes to Go” from 5 to 7 p.m. on the sidewalk in front of the house of worship at 75- 27 Metropolitan Ave.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the solemn spiritual season leading up to Easter. During Catholic Masses and Christian services held on that day, the faithful receive a cross of palm ashes on their foreheads as symbols of repentance and one’s own mortality.

While most congregations will administer the ashes inside church, Pastor Barrett plans to provide the ashes to anyone on the street who requests it. She indicated this gesture aims to be “a sign of our renewed commitment of the connection between God, our spiritual lives, our daily tasks and journey.”
