Jackson Heights residents and activists honored Rep. Joe Crowley (third from right) at a ceremony last Thursday, Jan. 30, for his ongoing efforts to improve the lives of Sikh-Americans and the Indian-American community. Nearly 100 community members and leaders attended the event organized by the Jackson Heights Merchants Association. Crowley has called for an end to the U.S. military’s ban on Sikh articles of faith and for the FBI to crack down on hate crimes against Sikh- and Hindu-Americans. Standing with Crowley are members of the Jackson Heights Merchants Association and the Sikh Gurdwara of Richmond Hill.
