Ridgewood House Fire Claims Senior Citizen’s Life

An elderly Ridgewood woman died from injuries she sustained after a blaze engulfed her home on Monday morning, Mar. 3, it was reported.

Police identified her as Maria Tchinkel, 92, of Himrod Street. Two men related to the victim were rescued and rushed to a local hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.

Fire Department sources said the one-alarm inferno ignited at about 10:25 a.m. Monday inside the first floor of Tchinkel’s residence on Himrod Street near Woodward Avenue.

Sources familiar with the investigation stated the blaze started in the rear of the home and quickly spread throughout the structure.

Responding to the scene (listed in the order of arrival) were members of Engine companies 291, 237, 277, 206 and 286; Ladder companies 140, 124, 112, 135 and 128; Squad Co. 288; Rescue 4 and Battalions 28 and 37, under the direction of Division 14.

Officers from the 104th Precinct along with EMS units and the American Red Cross also provided assistance.

While fighting the fire, law enforcement sources stated, firefighters found Tchinkel unconscious and unresponsive. She was pulled from the structure and transferred to paramedics, who rushed her to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.

Doctors pronounced Tchinkel dead upon arriving at the hospital. Her body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

An investigation by FDNY marshals into the cause of the deadly blaze is ongoing, police said.
