JOHN T. WALTHERS, president of the Ridgewood Times Printing and
Publishing Co., Inc. died suddenly on Thursday, June 12, at the age of 59.
A native of Ridgewood, he was a graduate of Our Lady of the Miraculous
Medal School, High School of Arts and Design, City University of New
York and Brooklyn College. He joined the Ridgewood Times/Times
Newsweekly team in 1984 and became president of the corporation in 1991.
He was the beloved son of Maureen E. Walthers, and the late John E.,
dearest brother of Patricia Mack, loving uncle ofAva and Isabel Mack; also
survived by many relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was
offered on Saturday, June 14, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church,
Ridgewood, followed by interment at St. John Cemetery, Middle Village.

LARRY GUNDERSEN ended his courageous fight against cancer on
Tuesday, May 27, at the age of 63. Beloved son and fishing buddy of Garfield;
predeceased by his loving mother, Margaret. Father of Geraldine, grandfather
of triplets, Jerry, Amelia and Ben. Loving brother of Janet Leonhardt, Linda
Schaefer, Susan Vignola and Tricia Sena. Fun-loving uncle of numerous nieces
and nephews, and long time cherished companion of Alice Albrecht. Private
cremation followed by interment at St. John Cemetery, Middle Village. He is
deeply missed by those who loved & cared for him.

JOHN NOVIELLI died on Monday, June 16, at the age of 56. He was the
beloved husband of Marie E. Novielli, loving father of Frank Novielli, Nicole
Novielli and Angela Novielli, cherished grandfather of Ryan and Natalie,
devoted son of Concetta and the late Frank Novielli and dear brother of Joseph
Novielli. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, June 20, at 9:30
a.m. at St. Teresa Church, Woodside, followed by entombment at St. Michael’s
Cemetery, East Elmhurst, under the direction of Papavero Funeral Home, 72-
27 Grand Ave., Maspeth.

CARLOS MALENA died on Wednesday, June 11, at the age of 27. He was
the beloved husband of Quanicia J. Malena, loving son of Haydee and Miguel
Malena, son-in-law of Angela Gilliam, dear brother of Miguel and Ruth; and
Mia and Marcel and cherished grandson of Maria Malena, Ludovina and P. De
Los Santos and the late Euleterio Malena. He is also survived by numerous
loving aunts, uncles and cousins and his best friend, Maxi. A Mass of Christian
Burial was offered on Saturday, June 14, at Most Holy Trinity Church,
Brooklyn, followed by cremation at Fresh Pond Crematory, Middle Village,
and interment of cremated remains at Linden Hill Cemetery, Ridgewood,
under the direction of Papavero Funeral Home, 72-27 Grand Ave., Maspeth.

STELLA LASCALA died on Friday, June 13, at the age of 93. She was the
wife of the late Joseph, loving mother of Joseph LaScala and Barbara Plumer,
mother-in-law of Fanny and Frederick, cherished grandmother of Peter and
Tanya; Janis and Michael; Ronald and Deborah; Sheree-Lyn and Frank; and
Keith and great-grandmother of Ryan, Gabriella, Thomas, Vincent, Mitchell,
Jonathan and Matthew. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday,
June 17, at St. Stanislaus Church, Maspeth, followed by interment at St. John
Cemetery, Middle Village, under the direction of Papavero Funeral Home, 72-

DENISE ANN GORZELNIK died on Wednesday, June 11, at the age of 57.
She was the beloved wife of James Gorzelnik, loving mother of Angela, James
Charles and Jamie, mother-in-law of Ward, Ana and Prince, devoted daughter
of Lucy Weeks, cherished grandmother of Kyanna, Angelica, Elijah, Christian,
Nathaniel, Lyanna, Sinceraty, Leaila and Emmarie and dear sister of Diann
Hartmann. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday, June
17, at St. Nicholas Church, Brooklyn, followed by interment at St. John
Cemetery, Middle Village, under the direction of Papavero Funeral Home, 72-

ALOIS SCHLEIMER of Orlando, Fla. died on Wednesday, May 28, at the
age of 90. A native of Gottschee, Yugoslavia, he was the husband of the late
Marie, devoted father of Anita Kennedy and the late Ingrid Schleimer, fatherin law of Bill, loving grandfather of Courtney, grandfather-in-law of Brendan
and dear great-grandfather of Logan. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered
at St. Matthias Church, Ridgewood, followed by interment at St. John
Cemetery, Middle Village, under the direction of Morton Funeral
Home/Ridgewood Chapels, 663 Grandview Ave., Ridgewood.

ROBERT PAUL SAPHIER died on Thursday, June 5, at the age of 70. He
was the beloved husband of Evelyn K. Saphier, loving son of Lilian and the
late Frederick Saphier, dear brother of Judith Zeichner and cherished uncle of
Christine. A private cremation was held on Saturday, June 7, at Fresh Pond
Crematory, Middle Village, under the direction of Papavero Funeral Home,
