JAMAICA — A Jamaica man who formerly worked as a certified public accountant pleaded guilty to charges that he tried to defraud New York state out of millions of dollars in tax credits, the state Department of Taxation and Finance said.
MD Hyder Alam, 47, pleaded guilty May 27 to fourth-degree attempted grand larceny, a misdemeanor, and was ordered to pay the state a restitution charge of $75,000, the tax department said.
Alam was arrested last year after an investigation revealed that he claimed unqualified credits by filing a total of 367 state tax returns for the 2009 tax year, according to the department.
