News From The Queens Tourism Council

There are a few pumpkin/harvest events, but the upcoming week is marked by its diversity of entertainment.

Consider big names such as Martha Graham, Eddie Money and the World’s Fair along with lectures, classical music, slave narrative-influenced art, beekeeping, a book fair, a bridal show and a bicycle tour.

Here’s the rundown.

Tonight (Thursday), Oct. 9, Sunnyside Gardens at 90: Lecture and Exhibit, 7 p.m. Historian and preservationist Jeffrey A. Kroessler and architect Laura Heim, past president of the AIA Queens Chapter, offer an illustrated lecture on Sunnyside Gardens. $5. Thursday, Oct. 9, Lost Dog Orchestra Presents Rhodebeck, 8 p.m. This Astoria-based ensemble presents a one-hour suite from the Hersch work Rhodebeck, paired with a rare performance of Abel DeCaux’s haunting lateimpressionist work, Clair De Lune. Thursday, Oct. 9, Fugitive Art and Fugitive Testimony: Slave Narratives Then and Now, noon. In the 1990s a number of visual artists used literary slave narratives as templates for their work. In this lecture, Hunter College Speaker in the Humanities Janet Neary brings together contemporary visual slave narratives and classic slave narratives from the 19th century to examine the way black artists and writers respond to institutional constraints. Thursday, Oct. 9, Beginner Beekeeping Course, 7:30 p.m. Master beekeeper Walter Blohm teaches basic biology and anatomy of honey bees as well as apiculture essentials such as colony care, honey extraction, equipment and disease prevention. Friday, Oct. 10, Project! World’s Fair, 8 to 11 p.m. Against the backdrop of rockets, visitors are treated to large-scale artist projections and installations on, and around, the New York Hall of Science’s building and exhibits. Participants have the opportunity to learn and experiment with turn-ofthe century photography methods, as well as live video mixing and projection mapping technologies and activities related to light and image. $20, includes beer and cocktails inspired by the turn of the century. Friday, Oct. 10, Broadway in Jamaica Soiree, 7 p.m. This fundraiser for the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning includes special appearances by soprano Mari-Yan Pringle from the anniversary tour of Porgy and Bess, dance performances by the Edge School of theArts, and music by the renowned Bartlett Contemporaries. Friday, Oct. 10, Jackie Daly and Matt Cranitch in Concert, 7:30 p.m. The words “Button Accordion” and “Jackie Daly” are synonymous in the world of Irish traditional music. Fiddle player Matt Cranitch has performed at concerts and festivals, and on radio and television. He has presented lectures, master-classes, and workshops on various aspects of Irish music. $22/$15 for seniors, students, unemployed. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10- 11, Hispanic/Latino Book Fair of NY. This eighth annual event honors Mexican poet Carmen Boullosa. Authors from various countries, book readings, children’s activities and book signing. Free. Renaissance Charter School, 35-59 81st St., Jackson Heights.

Friday, Oct. 10, through Sunday, Oct. 19, Astoria Art Festival. More than 30 venues are participating. Free and open to public. More info at www.astoriaartfestival.com.

Friday, Oct. 10, Goodbye South, Goodbye, 7 p.m. The Museum of the Moving Image (MMI) presents a series on Hou Hsiao-hsien, the leading figure of the Taiwanese New Cinema movement. In Goodbye South, the main character is a petty crime ring leader who originates schemes such as selling hogs to the government. MMI, 36-01 35th Ave., Kaufman Arts District, www.movingimage.us.

Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11- 12, Martha Graham Dance Company, Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. This is the first time this legendary troupe presents at Queens Theatre. Saturday, Oct. 11, The Revitalization of Prospect Cemetery and the Chapel of the Sisters, 2:30 p.m. Prospect Cemetery is the oldest family burial ground in Queens, dating from at least 1668. Saturday, Oct. 11-12, Twelfth Annual Open House New York Weekend. In total, 37 Queens venues are participating in this event. More information at www.ohny.org.

Saturday, Oct. 11, Fall Festival and Touch & Truck, 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Visitors can climb inside, touch and explore big rigs during this fundraiser for theYMCA. Plus, the Fall Festival offers arts & crafts, pumpkin picking, a rock wall, bouncy house and more. $10 ($5 each additional child) pre-sale/ $15 ($5 each additional child) day of purchase. Saturday, Oct. 11, Dust in the Wind preceded by La Belle Epoque, 2:30 p.m. The Museum of the Moving Image presents a series on Hou Hsiao-hsien, the leading figure of the Taiwanese New Cinema movement. In Dust in the Wind, teen lovers Wan and Huen are separated when Wan leaves their mining village to seek work in Taipei. Huen follows him, but the big city is toxic for them and their fellow provincial migrants, who are doing odd jobs just to scrape by. The couple’s bond gets tested when Wan is called for compulsory military service. Preceded by La Belle Epoque, Hou’s contribution to the 2011 anthology film 10 + 10. Sunday, Oct. 12, The Las Vegas Tribute to The 5 Kings of Motown, 3 p.m. This popular Vegas show pays tribute to the famous Motown sound with fancy footwork, vocal versatility and showmanship. $42-$35. Queensborough Performing Arts Center, 222-05 56th Ave., Bayside, www.visitqpac.org.

Sunday, Oct. 12, Rockspot Bike Tour, 11 a.m to 1 p.m. Participants explore select sites of environmental and historical significance along the Rockaway Peninsula. Tour departs from Jacob Riis Bathouse and travels through Gateway National Park to the west end of the Rockaway Peninsula. Sunday, Oct. 12, A City of Sadness, 6 p.m. TheMuseum of the Moving Image presents a series on Hou Hsiao-hsien, the leading figure of the Taiwanese New Cinema movement. City of Sadness is an intimate epic which chronicles the tragedies that befall the three Lin brothers-a gangster, a translator for the Japanese administration, and a photographer-and those around them during a chaotic period in Taiwan’s national history, between the end of Japanese Imperial rule (1945) and the secession from mainland China and creation of martial law (1949-1987). Monday, Oct. 13, Biggest Bridal Show of 2014, 5:30 p.m to 9:30 p.m. More than 100 vendors, runway fashion show, destination wedding section, seminars, live band and deejay performances. $10. The Shops at Atlas Park, 80-00 Cooper Ave., Glendale.

Monday, Oct. 13, Middle East Meltdown & Israel, 1:30 p.m. Professor Mark Rosenblum discusses the Middle East. Since the mid 1980s, Rosenblum has been involved in organizing and moderating six international conferences with leaders of the PLO, the PalestinianAuthority, and Israeli national figures.
