New Queens Library Hours In January

Operational Shift Aims Too Improve Customer Convenience

The new year will bring new operating hours at the Queens Borough Public Library.

Beginning on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, the library will shift opening and closing times at all of its branches to better accommodate residents from all walks of life, Queens Library Interim President and CEO Bridget Quinn-Carey announced on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

“Many library users have told us they wanted later evenings in order to be able to use the library after work or school,” she said. “Others preferred earlier mornings, especially to accommodate preschoolers. We heard you!”

Just two of Queens Library’s 62 locations will be open every day of the week: the Central Library at 89-11 Merrick Blvd. in Jamaica and the Flushing branch at 41-10 Main St. These branches will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sundays from 12 to 5 p.m.

Eighteen branches offer service Mondays through Saturdays, though Quinn noted Queens Library will seek additional government funds to expand six-day service throughout its system.

Local libraries that currently offer six-day service include Elmhurst (temporarily located at 85-08 51st Ave.), Forest Hills (108-19 71st Ave.), Jackson Heights (35-51 81st St.), Langston Hughes (100-01 Northern Blvd. in Corona), Lefferts (103-34 Lefferts Blvd. in Richmond Hill), Long Island City (37-44 21st St.), Ridgewood (2012 Madison St.) and Sunnyside (43-31 Greenpoint Ave.).

These branches will operate on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays from 1 to 6 p.m.; Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursdays from 12 to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

All other locations will be open five days a week on Mondays and Thursdays from 12 to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays from 1 to 6 p.m.; and Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The changes in branch hours will not affect self-serve exterior check-in kiosks open 24 hours a day at select Queens Library branches.
