LONG ISLAND CITY — Police from the 108th Precinct were searching for a suspect who was caught on camera trying to unlock a phone he allegedly stole from a No. 7 subway rider in Long Island City, the NYPD said.

A 20-year-old man told police he was on a northbound 7 train April 27 when he was approached by the suspect around 2:30 a.m. The suspect said he had a gun and demanded the rider hand over his phone, police said.

The victim gave him the phone and the suspect got off at Queensboro Plaza, police said. The suspect is described by police as in his mid-30s, 5-foot-4, wearing a blue, waist-length jacket and a dark-colored baseball cap.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
