Four-alarm fire snarls traffic, transportation in downtown Flushing

By Gina Martinez

A four-alarm fire has spread through the floors of a commercial building at the main crossroads in downtown Flushing, FDNY said.

The fire broke out at 135-42 Roosevelt Ave., where the 7 Express Chinese food restaurant is located, at 12:02 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and was still active as of 5:15 p.m..

A total of 39 units and 168 firefighters have been dispatched to put out the blaze, FDNY said.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, but no civilians have been injured, officials said.

City Councilman Peter Koo ( D-Flushing) sent out a tweet, telling resident to avoid Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue, where the fire started. The street has been shut down by firefighters and there were reports of heavy traffic.

Train and bus service has also been effected. Due to a smoke and water condition at the Flushing-Main Street station, there is currently no No. 7 train service between Mets-Willets Point and Flushing-Main Street in either directions. The MTA said 7 trains were running with delays in both directions.

The cause of the fire was not yet known. Investigations are ongoing, officials said.
