Bellerose man killed on LIE as he stands by his car

A 20-year-old Bellerose man has died following a car accident Wednesday on the Long Island Expressway, police said.

A 8 a.m. officers responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian struck on the LIE near Exit 27.

Police said a preliminary investigation determined that a 2002 Jeep Liberty was traveling eastbound on the LIE and hit Vishal Kumar, who was standing on the shoulder outside his car for an undetermined reason.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found Kumar unconscious and unresponsive, with trauma to the head and body. He was taken to North Shore University Manhasset Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the driver of the Jeep remained at the scene.

The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad was conducting the ongoing investigating.
