A Brooklyn man faces seven years in jail after being convicted of trying to burglarize a Bayside home that was equipped with a video surveillance system in July 2016.
Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said that Fabio Abreu, 26, was convicted of second-degree attempted burglary and third-degree criminal trespass. Sentencing is set for Jan. 9, 2018, where Abreu faces seven years behind bars.
According to trial testimony, on July 24, 2016, Abreu was caught on camera jumping the locked fence of a home located on 223rd Street and entering the backyard. While in the backyard, Abreu was seen trying to open windows and doors in an attempt to gain entry to the home.
Once Abreu reached the back door, he saw the surveillance cameras. In an attempt to cover his tracks, Abreu went to the front door, which was equipped with a Ring.com doorbell camera. When he approached the door, he triggered the camera, which captured a video of his face before he fled the scene.
Following the burglary, the homeowner posted a photograph still of Abreu from the Ring.com video on Facebook. The next day, a 911 caller who had seen the photo called in a report stating that he saw Abreu in a nearby park, which led to Abreu’s arrest.
“This defendant attempted to break into a private residence that was prepared and waiting for his arrival,” said Brown. “As the defendant jumped over a locked fence, looked in multiple windows and attempted to open the back door, all of his actions were being recorded on a home video system. Stills from the video were later uploaded to a social media site which resulted in his apprehension and conviction.”
