The Flushing Church on the Hill is inviting the community to its free annual fall concert “Music in a Sacred Space” Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
There will be a reception to follow in the lower hall of the church — located at 167-07 35th Ave. — also free of charge, with food and beverages.
The concert will include performances from Balinese art ensemble Gamelan Yowana Sari, with more than 20 percussionists and dancers, founded by Michael Lipsey in collaboration with Queens College in 2011.
Gamelan Yowana Sari, currently in residence at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, started as a college percussion ensemble before turning into a group that actively performing throughout the Tri-State area.
Gamelan Yowana Sari focuses on having a repertoire that includes both traditional and contemporary works of Balinese gamelan music. They continuously collaborate with dancers and with Balinese composer, Dewa Alit, as well as American composers Evan Ziporyn, and Glenn Kotche. With the help of Gusti Komin, a skillful Balinese percussionist, they are able to embody the Balinese music style to their full potential.
This past summer, the group traveled to Bali to study with professional musicians in Ubud. They’ve been invited to return to Bali next summer to perform.
