Hundreds packed on to the backlot at the Kaufman Astoria Studios on Friday, Sept. 23, for the return of the “Broadway in the Boros” concert presented by the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, back for a fifth run, after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The free event featured live performances from the casts of the popular Broadway hits “Wicked,” “Beetlejuice” and “SIX.”

“Our Astoria community welcomed Broadway in the Boros back with open arms, which is a true testament to this neighborhood’s strong connection to culture and the arts,” said Tracy Capune, vice president of Kaufman Astoria Studios. “Thanks to support from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the Kaufman Arts District hosted three world-class Broadway performances in our Kaufman Astoria Studios’ backlot — paying tribute to our historical past while also acknowledging the bright future of emerging artists and performers.”

Broadway in the Boros is back to providing live performances to New York City neighborhoods outside Manhattan by cast members and musicians of current Broadway musicals.

“After two long years, I am thrilled to see our city continue its reopening with the return of Broadway on the Boros,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement. “This remarkable series works to ensure that everyone in our city, regardless of their ZIP code, gets the chance to experience the magic of Broadway right in their backyards. Broadway is a lifeblood in our city, and this series is an incredible way for all New Yorkers to come out and relish in the magic that makes New York City’s heartbeat.”
