While a swath of northeast Queens flipped red on Election Day, with Republican George Santos capturing the 3rd Congressional District race, the old guard remains intact.
Congresswoman Grace Meng declared victory over Republican Thomas Zmich with 63.19% of the votes, according to unofficial results from the city’s Board of Elections, and she welcomed two new neighborhoods to her 6th Congressional District.
“Once again, I am deeply grateful to the voters of the 6th District for choosing me to represent them in our nation’s capital. I am honored to be their voice in Washington, and I will continue working nonstop on their behalf each and every day,” Meng said. “I am also thrilled that Jackson Heights and Woodside will now be among the outstanding and vibrant communities which encompass my district. I love Queens. I was born and raised here, and it’s where I’m raising my family, and I will continue working tirelessly to improve the quality of life in our borough.”
She will now be working alongside Whitestone’s Santos, who declared victory over Robert Zimmerman in the race to replace Congressman Tom Suozzi.
“The American dream is worth fighting for — it’s worth defending — and that’s why I jumped into this race,” Santos told his supporters at Il Bacco in Little Neck. “What comes next is simple: a rescue mission to save our country; to take back control of common sense for our youth; to deliver on quality education; to deliver honest opportunities of employment; to deliver lower costs of energy; to make America energy independent.”
Elsewhere in northeast Queens, state Senator Toby Ann Stavisky thanked her new neighbors for re-electing her while declaring victory over Republican challenger Stefano Forte in District 11.
“The results of this election is sending a clear message: extremism has no place in our community. The stakes in this year could not have been higher; with reproductive rights, public safety, and civil liberties on the line, this community wants a strong and experienced advocate in their corner,” Stavisky said. “I am deeply honored to be re-elected in this moment and I will continue to stand against right-wing extremism and hate-mongering in all its ugly forms. I want to thank all of the volunteers, elected officials, community leaders, and labor unions who supported this movement and I look forward to continuing to defend the fundamental rights of everyone in this district, in this city, and in this state.”
Additionally, State Senator John Liu was leading Republican challenger Ruben D. Cruz II with 57.67% of the vote (27,202 votes) as of Wednesday morning, with 99% of scanners reported.
In the Assembly races, Incumbent Democrat Nily Rozic led Republican challenger Seth Breland with 56.50% of the vote (11,126 votes) as of Wednesday morning, with 97.37% of scanners reported.
In the 26th District, Democratic incumbent Edward C. Braunstein led Republican challenger Robert J. Speranza with 53.87% of the vote (17,748 votes) as of Wednesday morning, with 99% of scanners reported.
And in the 27th, Democratic incumbent Daniel Rosenthal led Republican challenger Angelo King with 57.60% of the vote (13,175 votes) as of Wednesday morning, with 99% of scanners reported.
Results will not be official until they are certified by the Board of Elections.
