The Yankees’ woeful start to the season became even more of a memory Friday when they won their fourth straight game, beating the Angels 5-0 in their home opener in The Bronx. And after shaky starts to the new year, both Hiroki Kuroda and Alex Rodriguez produced, while Nick Swisher delivered the key hit for a second consecutive game. Swisher, who hit a game-winning homer in the 10th inning in Baltimore Wednesday, belted a two-out, three-run double in the first to put the Yankees up 3-0 Friday. Read More: New York Post
Driver Arrested After Toddler Is Stranded On Queens School Bus
A two-year-old girl was left stranded on a school bus in Corona, Queens on Thursday morning. A 911 call from a Consolidated Edison worker in the area alerted police to the girl, left alone on a private school bus parked on Christie Avenue. The child, who was headed to Kathys Day Care Center, was found to be in good physical condition and was reunited with her mother. The bus driver, Ana Garcia, was arrested when she returned to the bus and was later arraigned. She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and released without bail. Garcia lives near the site of where she parked the school bus. Read More: NY1
Retired Officer “Glad To Be Alive” After Pharmacy Robbery Shootout
As police continue to search for the second suspect in yesterday’s East Harlem pharmacy robbery, the retired lieutenant involved in the fatal shooting of the other suspect is speaking out. Police are not saying if the shots fired by retired lieutenant Thomas Barnes were the ones that killed Rudolph Wyatt, 23. However, Barnes did confront Wyatt after he exchanged fire and ran from the responding officers. During the 21 years he was on the force Barnes says he never fired his weapon and the lieutenant says he is grateful this incident ended the way it did. Read More: NY1
Three workers rescued after dangling from Manhattan high-rise scaffolding
A battle of the badges between cops and firefighters erupted today over a high-rise scaffold rescue on the Upper East Side. A 911 call brought police and firefighters to 200 East 66th Street at around 10:20 a.m. ESU Det. James Coll went to the building’s 20th floor and rappelled down by rope to the scaffold, where three frightened building maintenance workers were hanging on for dear life. Read More: New York Post
Manhattan ‘grope’ goon charged
Police charged a Brooklyn man with groping three women in Manhattan, police said. Karl Vanderwoude, 26, was taken into custody yesterday from his Park Slope basement home after police received several tips through Crime Stoppers, sources said. The police department conducted line-ups, and Vanderwoude was positively identified by victims, sources said. Vanderwoude allegedly approached a 22-year-old woman around 7:20 p.m. March 30, put his hand between her legs, and then took off, authorities said. Read More: New York Post
Tax-cheat charges for charters big
A BROOKLYN charter school leader who earned as much as $500,000 a year was arrested Thursday on charges of bilking the state of more than $70,000 in taxes. Eddie Calderon-Melendez, who earned $1.4 million managing three charter schools from 2005 to 2010, paid for a European vacation in 2009 with a school credit card. That year, he was paid more than $500,000, the criminal complaint charges. Read More: Daily News
