Numerous elected officials and civic activists gathered at P.S. 343 last Friday, Dec. 19, to name the new Sunnyside building the Walter McCaffrey Campus, honoring the late, long-time City Council member who represented the area. It was the latest tribute to the lawmaker served the 26th District that included the neighborhoods of Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside between 1985 and 2001. Previously, the intersection of 61st Street and Woodside Avenue was named in his honor. City Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer, who occupies the seat McCaffrey once held, was among those in attendance. Also on hand were Rep. Joe Crowley; State Sen. Michael Gianaris; Community Board 2 Chairperson Joseph Conley; David Aglialoro, Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan’s chief of staff; and Don McCallian, president of the United Forties Civic Association.
