Thanks to an anonymous tipster, detectives tracked down a Bushwick man allegedly behind a shooting at a local playground last week that claimed a Ridgewood man’s life and injured two other victims, police announced on Monday.

Damien Grimes Fuller, 18, of Hancock Street faces second-degree murder and other charges for allegedly triggering the July 26 shooting at Bushwick Playground that led to the death of Ridgewood’s Hamler Cabrera-DeJesus, 21, of Gates Avenue.

At about 6:30 p.m. on July 26, police said, Cabrera-DeJesus and a group of friends were sitting on a bench at the playground, located at the corner of Knickerbocker Avenue and Madison Street, when the shots rang out.

According to a WPIX-TV report, the bullets flew after the suspect and a group of the victim’s friends got into an argument. Law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation could not confirm those details, but noted that the victim and shooter were not known to each other.

Police said that Cabrera-DeJesus took a bullet to his back, while a 20-year-old man was shot in the back and the left elbow, and another 20-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his left forearm.

Officers from the 83rd Precinct and EMS units rushed to the scene. Paramedics rushed Cabrera-DeJesus to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The other victims were treated for their injuries at Brookdale University Hospital.

Grimes Fuller has just one prior arrest, according to police; the 83rd Precinct picked him up in December of 2017 on a litany of charges including robbery and assault. Court records noted that he was released on $10,000 bond on Jan. 8 of this year, and was scheduled to return to court on Aug. 21 for another hearing related to that case.

Now, Grimes Fuller is awaiting arraignment on charges including second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment in connection with the playground shooting.
