Where Battered Women Can Turn

Where do you turn if you are a victim of domestic violence? The New York Police Department has a 24-hour Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-621-HOPE (TTY: 1-800-810-7444.) Counselors are available to speak with you 24 hours a day on the hotline.
The City offers the following checklist of warning signs.
Does your partner:
Control what you do, with whom you associate, or where you go?
Make all decisions?
Destroy your property or threaten to hurt your pets?
Shove, slap, kick or hit you?
Threaten to kill you or commit suicide?
Act like the abuse is no big deal, say it’s your fault, or even deny doing it?
If you answered "yes" to even one of these questions, you may be in an abusive relationship.
According to District Attorney Richard A. Brown, nationwide at least a half million, and by some estimates, four million, women are assaulted by their spouses and partners.
He has established a special unit, the Domestic Violence Unit, within his office to deal with violence inside the home, between spouses, partners or people who share children.
Domestic violence spans all racial, socio-economic and demographic boundaries. Its many forms include battering, rape and homicide to threats of violence, verbal assaults and other forms of intimidation.
