The Little Neck-Douglaston Lions Club was scheduled to celebrate its 50th anniversary next week with a dinner dance honoring several community leaders, including longtime club member Dr. Herman Belkin.
The club, which began in 1952, is a service organization that donates money to several worthy causes, including student scholarships, the Little Neck-Douglaston Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the Boy Scouts.
“It’s a service organization,” said Belkin, a charter member who is being honored as “Lion of the Year” at the club’s March 1 dinner dance. “We try to help people who are less fortunate.”
This year the club is recognizing its 50th anniversary during its annual dinner dance held this year at the New Hyde Park Inn. The dance is a fund-raising event, said Belkin, and a way for the group to honor members of the community.
At the March 1 dinner dance the group was expected to recognize MS 67 Principal Mae Fong as “Woman of the Year” and civic leader John Ostendorf as “Man of the Year.”
Belkin, a dentist who has lived in Little Neck for 48 years, said he was proud to be recognized by his fellow club members.
“I feel great,” he said. “It’s very nice.”
