Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point.
I hope your family enjoyed the Passover and Easter holidays and I hope that all the Easter eggs that were hid were found and counted.
We were all happy that Sgt. David Wurtz received the Purple Heart and came home from Afghanistan to College Point to recuperate, but most assuredly no one was more elated than his parents, Joan and Clem. David was born and raised in College Point and graduated from Flushing High School. He enlisted in the Army while in high school through the delayed entry program. After recovery from his injuries, he will most likely return to Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division, for the remainder of his nine-month tour. After he finishes with the Army, he plans to join the New York City Police Department. Good luck with all of your endeavors, David.
Congratulations to all of the Girl Scouts, especially the Silver Award honorees whose ceremony took place at the Church on the Hill in Flushing. The Silver Award is the highest Cadet achievement representing a culmination of many accomplishments. The honorees were Amy Blauner, Carla Hung, Samantha Kerath, Sara Lizzul, Andrea Marsala, Gabrielle Nussbaum, Linda Saur and Lauren Schneiderman. Sen. Frank Padavan (R-Bellerose) presented these girls with a proclamation and a state medal. Borough President Helen Marshall and Assemblywoman Ann-Margaret Carrozza also sent proclamations.
Eva Hrastnig-Mieras is the delegate of the North Queens 3 Service Unit of which Girl Scout Troop 4-089 is a member.
A very happy birthday to Leona Ryan who is a very big fan of mine.
Speedy recovery to Lucie Shannon, John Tie and Dotty Securanza.
The Rev. Carl Rosenblum, interim pastor of the First Reformed Church, had a very warm, loving farewell luncheon as he left for Glendale Reformed Church. The children of the Sunday School made the crosses that were given to each parishioner during this holy week. Linda Burlew was to begin her duties as pastor April 1.
Happy retirement to Lucy Nunziato, executive vice president of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, who was a big asset to the Chamber. Proclamations were given to her by Borough President Marshall and Sen. Padavan.
