Glen Oaks Little League ends season with awards

By Adam Kramer

The Glen Oaks Little League will honor its stars at its annual awards ceremony Friday, Sept. 13. The awards night will take place at the Irwin Altman Beacon School — MS 172 — in Floral Park from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The league’s president, Joe Conway, said there will also be a special ceremony to congratulate the league’s 13- to 14-year-old girls all-stars. The team had a fabulous season winning the District 26 (northern Queens) championship and advancing to the borough’s sectional finals.

Ballplayers in each of the Glen Oaks league will be awarded participation trophies, and there will be a special presentation for the all-star teams and the championship teams.

The league’s divisions include PeeWee, boys and girls ages 5 and 6; Farms, boys and girls ages 7 and 8; International, boys and girls ages 9 and 10; and Major, boys and girls ages 11 and 12.

The Glen Oaks Little League, started in 1952, has more than 400 league players on 32 teams who come from Glen Oaks, Floral Park, New Hyde Park and Bellerose. The league also sponsors T-ball softball and hardball programs.

“The league brings a sense of community spirit,” Bob Kelleher of Glen Oaks, who has two sons on teams, said on opening day in June. “For the kids it teaches them discipline, hard work and sportsmanship, which are all traits you take with you through out your adult life.”

He said he remembers the things he learned when he was a child and his father was the coach. Kelleher said the league, which attracts kids from all walks of life, lets them have fun and play baseball.
