St. Greg’s kicks off season with field blessing

The St. Gregory’s Athletic Association of Bellerose celebrated the opening of the 2003 baseball/softball season with Rev. Joseph Cunningham. Field maintenance director John Abrusci and team have been busy shaping the field for the past several months

Cunningham greeted his parishioners, parents and players with a warm welcome on a cold, wet day. After a prayer service and blessing of the field, Cunningham remarked on the importance of developing the basic skills in playing the game, along with good sportsmanship.

Closing the ceremony were Kim Harms and Brian Higgins’ (filling in for his dad Mal) throwing out the first and second official pitches of the season. Harms and Mal were awarded St. Gregory’s Athletic Association’s prestigious “Tony LoBosso” award for service to the athletic program over many years.

As St. Gregory’s moves into the 2003 season, more than 300 families and 500 participants are expected to compete throughout the Brooklyn-Queens CYO fields. In the upcoming weeks, Chris Cahill and Carol Kennedy will be introducing St. Gregory’s intramural program, in which hundreds of kids get the opportunity to try a sport, learn the rules and test the waters for future development.
