Teachers spend an average of $427 in out-of-pocket expenses, according to an investigation by Councilmember Eric Gioia. And he believes this to be a travesty, as the city should be doing more to prove adequate support for our teachers.
"We need to give teachers the resources they need and deserve to do their job," Gioia said. "I say to the mayorput your money where your mouth is. Teachers already put their hearts and souls into the classroom. They shouldnt need to put their paychecks too."
The investigation sampled 400 New York City teachers who were asked how much they spend annually on supplies for their classrooms. The report foudn that the majority, 65%, spend more than $250. Through recent cuts by Mayor Bloomberg, the maximum reimbursement level is $100.
"Just as we equip our troops with supplies for battle," Gioia said, "so too should we provide our teachers with the basic tools they need to give our kids an excellent education."
