Elementary school teachers in New York are being offered a chance to find ways to make their classes a little more green this year.

The City Parks Foundation will hold a professional development program, “Greening Your Lessons: A Summer Institute for Educators,” at Alley Pond Park Wednesday, Aug. 13. Teachers enrolled in ‘Greening your Lessons” are eligible for a new teacher credit, authorized by the New York City Department of Education.

The “Greening Your Lessons” program aims to educate teachers on how to effectively utilize the city’s many public green spaces and to integrate environmental awareness into their curricula.

Through “Greening Your Lessons,” teachers not only will learn to conduct hands-on classes in math, language arts, social studies, science and the creative arts in parks around the city, but will take home curricula, extensive field materials, and ideas for future lessons that are aligned with mandated standards. Through a series of outdoor workshops, educators learn how to use their local parks as outdoor classrooms. This program is targeted to educators working with elementary school children.

City Parks Foundation is the only independent, non-profit organization to offer park programs throughout the five boroughs. Serving more than 600,000 New Yorkers each year, CPF presents a broad range of free arts, sports and education programs in more than 250 parks citywide. CPF also helps citizens support their parks on a local level, and in doing so contributes to the revitalization of neighborhoods throughout New York City.

“Greening Your Lessons” is sponsored by The Lucius N. Littauer Foundation and the Greenwall Foundation.
