It is still not too late to register for the eighth annual Greater Urban Pro Tennis Classic conducted by Youth and Tennis Inc., a Jamaica tennis organization.
The men’s singles and doubles tournaments are scheduled to be held on the hardcourts of Cunningham Park in Fresh Meadows and Liberty Park in Jamaica starting Sunday, July 20, and lasting for a week.
Cash prizes will be awarded. It is an open tournament and could help the players with their rankings. Over the years it has drawn outstanding college players from the tri-state area, teaching pros and ranked players from the East.
Having played in the tournament and done well are Joe Gravagana of Whitestone, coach at Holy Cross High School; teaching pro Kerner Elie of Fresh Meadows; Zachary Gallin of East Setauket; Jerry Neptune of Jamaica; Ron Nano of Great Neck; and Sadik Sendich of Staten Island.
Tournament director Bill Briggs reported that the upcoming tournament will be bigger and better than in previous years.
“We realize that some of these players have full-time jobs as well,” a tournament spokesman said. “We will make every effort to accommodate them in terms of match time. We expect a large entry, especially in the singles. And we have some highly ranked players competing in our tournament.”
Some matches will be played under the lights, but most of them will be during the afternoon. Matches will be played all day on the first Sunday.
