There was very little Courtney Fitzgerald didn’t do for the St. John’s softball team last week.
The pitcher and lone senior on the team went 4-0 during the Red Storm’s 5-1 week, posting a 0.72 earned run average with 35 strikeouts in 29 innings and was named co-Big East Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
The Bellerose native and former Mary Louis standout allowed only three runs on 15 hits in four complete games and pitched 33 consecutive scoreless innings before allowing a fifth-inning run in a 5-3 win over Rutgers Sunday.
In a 6-0 win over Sacred Heart earlier in the week, Fitzgerald became St. John’s all-time career leader in wins (57) and shutouts (21).
Against Big East rival Villanova Saturday, the lefty hurler tossed a pair of shutouts as the Red Storm swept the Wildcats, 3-0 and 1-0. In 14 innings she allowed seven hits and no walks while striking out 17 Villanova batters.
In a 5-3 win over Rutgers Sunday, Fitzgerald allowed three runs on four hits while striking out 10.
On the season Fitzgerald is 15-3 with a 1.37 ERA, she has held opponents to a .187 batting average and she is averaging more than one strikeout per inning, with 132 Ks in 127.1 innings pitched.
After taking three of four Big East games last weekend, St. John’s improved to 26-24 and 8-8 in the league. The Red Storm returns to conference action Saturday with a home doubleheader against Syracuse.
Manicad named interim Baruch volleyball coach
Francis Lewis grad Jennifer Manicad was named interim women’s volleyball coach for the 2004 fall season, Baruch announced Monday.
The former Hunter volleyball player replaces Krishna Dass, who leaves to pursue a master’s in sports management at Brooklyn College.
“I am very excited about receiving the opportunity from Baruch to coach their women’s team for the upcoming 2004 season,” said Manicad, who was an assistant coach under Dass for the past two seasons. “I am eager to build on the success and foundation that Krishna has started.”
