The funds, set aside as part of the budget process, will be matched with money from Borough President Helen Marshall for a total of $1.4 million to cover the costs of building the field in the park at 89th Avenue between 150th and 153rd streets in Jamaica, said Gennaro (D-Fresh Meadows).
“This is a great collaborative effort between my office, the Queens delegation and the borough president's office to find money to do this most worthwhile project,” he said.
The idea originated with representatives from Centro Hispano Cuzcatlan, a Latino group based in Jamaica. The park is often used by soccer players for informal pick-up games, and large swaths of grass have been trampled into dirt by the matches.
While the money has been set aside, it was unclear where the soccer field project fell on the Parks Department's priority list, Gennaro said. More information on when the pitch could be ready for play may be available later this month, he said.
