New printing plant for College Pt.

Construction of a new printing industry center, unanimously approved by CB 7 last week, is highlighting the rapid expansion of the College Point Corporate Park.
Centrally located, the 81,000 square foot Graphic Communications Center [GCC] will be built on College Point Blvd. and 31st Ave., less than three blocks away from such key connective arterials as the Van Wyck and Whitestone Expressways, and the Grand Central and Cross Island Parkways. Its closest neighbor on 31st Ave. will be the huge Home Depot.
GCC’s government relations advisor, Mark Thompson declared, “Everyone looks forward to completing this beautifully-designed facility and creating new jobs for local residents.”
Occupying the half-block single-floor plant, with a mezzanine, will be two rapidly expanding local firms: The N. Y. Sign Co. currently located in Flushing, as well as the Brooklyn-based Island Paper Products. They are expected to employ over 200 workers.
The project is on a fast track. After an expected approval from the Board of Standards and Appeals this summer, construction will take an estimated 20 months. The most time-consuming aspect will be driving piles into the high water table grounds of the old Flushing Airport surroundings.
Since parking is banned on all corporate park streets, the plans call for 80 parking spaces, plus a specially designed facility that funnels trucks and cars in and out through separate entries and exits. Plans also call for 14,000 square feet of landscaped trees along the plant’s perimeter.
