Councilman plants tree in Hyde Park Gardens

Councilmember and Environmental Protection Committee Chair James F. Gennaro celebrated Earth Day by planting the first tree of his “Plant a Tree for Free” campaign. The tree was planted in Hyde Park Gardens, a cooperative in Kew Gardens Hills.
“Planting the first tree of over 100 that my “Plant a Tree for Free” campaign will bring to this community is a fitting way to celebrate Earth Day,” said Gennaro.
Gennaro created his “Plant a Tree for Free” campaign last year, and has allocated a generous $150,000 in funding to ensure its success. This innovative beautification and environmental program offers an opportunity for Gennaro’s constituents to have trees planted in front of their homes free-of-charge. The program has proven to be wildly popular, with over a hundred of his constituents signing up to participate. Trees are expected to be planted by campaign partners, the NYC Parks Department, this planting season.
“These trees will not only make a lasting contribution to the beauty of our community, but they will also help to improve our environment,” said Gennaro.
Gennaro was joined at the tree planting ceremony by NYC Parks Department, Queens Borough Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski. “It is a pleasure to work with Councilman Gennaro on this project and many others that he has sponsored in his district. He understands the importance of trees and plants not only to the quality of life in Queens but to the sustainability of the environment,” said Lewandowski. “We expect to continue the tree plantings in the Councilman’s District through the fall planting season.”
Also at the tree planting were residents of Hyde Park Gardens and civic and community leaders.
